Kleinfelder Construction Services is seeking experienced Roadway Inspectors for our client, Caltrans, to perform quality assurance inspection services on transportation-related road and highway improvement projects throughout San Diego, Imperial, Sonoma, and San Joaquin Counties. The Roadway Inspector will be assigned a field vehicle and gas card, reporting to a construction job site(s), with the ability to work extended shifts and nights as needed.

Job Duties

    Perform quality assurance inspection and documentation of civil (roadway) construction activities under the direction of a Resident Engineer
  • Interpret plans, specifications and codes and verify that construction work is performed in accordance with them
  • Prepare detailed Daily Inspection Reports, with photos, accurately reflecting the construction progress
  • Measure, calculate, track, and record pay quantities for monthly estimates
  • Assist in maintaining, supporting, and promoting a safe work environment while complying with applicable safety rules, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain a set of field as-built drawings
  • Assist the Resident Engineer with field input on change orders, RFIs, submittals and response letters to the contractor, and as-built drawings

Qualifications/Skills

EITHER

1) Minimum of two (2) years of education equivalent to completion of a curriculum beyond the 12th grade in either engineering, surveying or comparable physical science

or

2a) One year performing duties comparable to those of a California state service Junior Engineering Technician, Range B

and

2b) Minimum of four (4) years of demonstrated experience in roadway construction inspection of highways or major public works projects including traffic control, PCC and AC paving, earthwork, grading, drainage, and signing and striping

OR

3) Minimum of six (6) years of demonstrated experience in roadway construction inspection of highways or major public works projects including traffic control, PCC and AC paving, earthwork, grading, drainage, and signing and striping

Additional Preferred Qualifications

1) BS degree in Civil Engineering and/or EIT

2) Caltrans inspection experience

3) Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs

4) Knowledge of Caltrans standard plans, specifications, procedures, and Construction Manual

5) Ability to assist the Resident Engineer in all aspects of required field and office construction engineering work including, but not limited to the following:

    • Experience in the inspection of traffic control system compliance
    • Experience in Water Pollution Control Program (Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan) enforcement
    • Knowledge and experience with equipment used in construction inspection, surveying, field testing of construction materials, and construction office engineering
    • Knowledge of computers, computer applications, and computer software programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and others)
    • Knowledge and experience with principles of effective communication and supervision
    • Ability to work night shifts for an extended duration

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the California Pay Transparency Law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience. Salary range: $41-$80/hour
