Summary of Duties:
The U'Ren lab at Washington State University is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to apply multi 'omics approaches to study the ecology and evolution of plant-endophyte interactions, with a special focus on fungi in the Xylariales (Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota). Position responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to, generation and analysis of multi-omics data (including genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic approaches), fungal functional trait assays, phylogenomic analyses, culturing and molecular identification of fungal endophytes, statistical analyses of endophyte communities and populations, and produce first authored papers, contribute to co-authored papers, and present work at national and international meetings. The postdoc will be expected to assist with training and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students in the lab and outreach activities.
The U'Ren laboratory is located in the Department of Plant Pathology on the Pullman campus of Washington State University. Members of the department are highly collaborative and interactive with scientists in the USDA and nearby University of Idaho. The lab is well-equipped with molecular biological and microbiology instruments and equipment and has access to state-of-the-art greenhouses, growth chambers, microscopy resources, and high-performance computing. Pullman is a college town located in the heart of the Palouse, on the Southeast border of Washington State, with easy access to a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities and all amenities in nearby cities, such as Spokane. Pullman has a very high quality of living, and has received accolades for highest quality of life, healthy community, safety, and green transportation.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in ecology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, plant pathology, or a related discipline.
Applicants must have:
- (i) prior experience in molecular biological research, including PCR and next-generation sequencing;
- (ii) a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing,
- (iii) strong skills to code in at least one programming language (e.g., R, python); and
- (iv) proven ability to work both independently and in collaborative teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous research experience in microbiology, phylogenetics, and comparative genomics.
- Prior experience in supervising undergraduate and/or high school researchers.

Annual Salary:
$60,000.00 -$ 70,000.00 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
