The Position

The City of Gunnison is seeking a qualified individual to fill a full-time Police Officer position. The right candidate would fulfill Gunnison PD's mission of "existing to maintain a high quality of life through prevention of crime, fair and equal treatment of all, and education in partnership with the citizens of Gunnison and its visitors." This position performs technical, professional, and administrative duties related to maintaining the security of the City, protecting constitutional guarantees of all persons, protecting life and property, preserving public peace and order, preventing, solving and detecting crimes, facilitating the safe movement of people and vehicles, and other emergency services as needed.

The Compensation and Benefits
Salary $68,900-93,100 dependent on qualifications. Lateral transfer accepted. Differential pay for shift work.
Signing Bonus $15,000. ($7,500 at hire, $7,500 at completion of Field Training.)

P.O.S.T. certification: Must possess a Colorado Basic Certification or Colorado Provisional Certification at time of appointment as a police officer.
_P.O.S.T. Training assistance_:
_Provisional Certificate Holders _– City of Gunnison will pay travel and training costs associated with full certification compliance after appointment and as part of a conditional offer.
_Non-Certificate Holders _– City of Gunnison will pay academy costs associated with full certification compliance as part of a conditional offer, to include appointment as a police cadet while attending academy and housing costs. Police Cadet wage is $24.56 an hour plus benefits.

*Collateral/Rotating assignments can include tactical team, detectives, community resource, department instructor, field training, armorer, and more.
*Training is conducted within the Department and through the Colorado P.O.S.T. program.

The Ideal Candidate
Minimum Qualifications include graduation from high school or general equivalency development (G.E.D.) and the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.

The Location

Gunnison is known for its natural beauty and amazing year-round recreational opportunities. The Gunnison River is home to the country's largest Kokanee salmon run and the biggest concentration of trout in Colorado. Blue Mesa Reservoir is the state's largest body of water and is ideal for many recreational activities. Hartman Rocks, located approximately two miles south of the City, includes base area trail head facilities, and an 8,300-acre recreation area managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The Cattlemen’s Days PCRA rodeo takes place over a 10-day period in July. Ranked among the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in America, we are home to Gunnison Valley Hospital. Western State Colorado University is a four-year institution with outstanding programs, including a variety of graduate programs. The Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, located in Gunnison, serves the community with air service on United during the summer and off-seasons and United, American, and Alaska during the winter. Gunnison is located within a short drive to three ski areas including Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain. And our Gunnison Watershed School District provides quality education as well.

City park facilities are superb and offer an incredible 110 acres of park land/1000 people in relation to the national average of 10 acres/1000, featuring an NHL-sized indoor ice rink and Olympic-sized outdoor covered rink and a 45,000 square foot Community Center, with an indoor aquatics area, climbing wall and other recreation facilities.
