The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff “for fit” makes significant contributions to Howard University’s overall mission.
 
BASIC FUNCTION:
The purpose of this position is to provide pedagogical, and research training for a post-doctoral fellow who will be housed in the English Department, College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University. The post-doctoral fellow will (a) advance their knowledge in in African American and African Diaspora literary and cultural theory (b) develop additional pedagogical expertise in these areas (c) Advance their dissertation’s research and writing project towards publication, benefiting from using the research Library facilities at Howard University’s Moorland Spingarn Research Center.
 
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Under the supervision of the chair of the Department of English
 
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include faculty, staff and students in the English Department and related departments in the college of Arts and Sciences; Director of Moorland Spingarn Research Center. External contacts could be writers and community at large as the fellow develops related projects which enhance their research. Works with office staff in a supportive way to assist the chair in executing a variety of research projects as assigned.
 
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Uses research skills to develop lecture series, faculty and graduate student works in progress; teaches one course each semester in a field related to African/African-American/African Diaspora Literary Studies; Develops additional relationships with professors in relevant subject areas; produces an updated book manuscript.
 
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Demonstrated research, writing and oral communication skills evident in the completion of a PhD dissertation; social media and other technical skills usable in the creation of departmental projects would be highly considered.
 
Requirements:
  • Should have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will also be considered eligible to apply.
  • Will be resident at Howard University in Washington D.C
  • Will be for the one academic year from September 2024 to May, 2025 of the following year extendable to one more year based on candidate’s justification of project’s timeline.
