Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Director for Strategic Communications and Marketing serves as the chief strategist responsible for developing and implementing an integrated marketing and communications program intended to raise the Division of Student Affairs profile among internal and external stakeholders. The Director for Strategic Communications and Marketing works with messaging and presentation in all forms, including Vice Presidential communications, publications, press and media functions, branding images and their consistent and proper use, web content and social media. The Director for Strategic Communications and Marketing provides leadership to all central Student Affairs efforts in communication with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and other external constituents. This position will supervise the Coordinator of Marketing and Communications in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. The new leader will make recommendations for the most efficient and effective organizational communications structure within the Division. The position will serve as a key communications facilitator and liaison during crisis and emergency situations. The Director serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT). Overall, the position will serve to promote and elevate the Division’s programs and services to the public – both on and off campus. The Director provides counsel and recommendations on policy and action in the management of reputational issues and crises affecting the Division. The Director monitors and promotes Student Affairs positioning in the marketplace, and coordinates its branding and messaging systems with the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience to include 5 years of demonstrated success in marketing, branding, communications and/or public relations fields, including management experience with creative teams.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Exceptional knowledge of the latest digital and integrated marketing tools, including both traditional and emerging media platforms; experience hiring/managing agencies to assist with this work.
  • Excellent written, verbal, editing, presentation, content strategy, interpersonal, management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience managing individuals, coordinating large projects, and communicating with internal and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated valuing of, and ability to work and communicate effectively with, students, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, and other intersecting identities and backgrounds.
  • Team-oriented, motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Demonstrated strong creative process skills with excellent graphic and design sense.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to gather, analyze and summarize data and trends.

  • Master’s degree preferred. Undergraduate or graduate degree in communications, public relations or marketing preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement new initiatives; experience applying strategic long-term thinking.
  • Experience in developing communication programs utilizing written material, graphic arts, web content development and electronic communications.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency in communications and marketing arena.
  • Ability to develop and implement a strategic vision or communications strategy – both within departments and more broadly for Student Affairs.
  • Demonstrated energy, creativity and overall character to engage team and constituencies, internally and externally, and ability to inspire trust in others.
  • Demonstrated experience exhibiting exceptional judgement, strong leadership and management skills, collegial work style and keen sense of diplomacy to facilitate effective collaboration and interdepartmental marketing and communications consistency.
  • Approach issues management in a way that anticipates needs and ensures timely action.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team, and manage multiple and competing priorities to ensure production of high-quality work in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to serve as DSA spokesperson on a variety of issues.

Additional Information:

Salary Range is in the mid $100K.

Work is conducted primarily in an office environment. Physical demands could include sitting for long periods of time, lifting as much as 20 pounds, and repetitive motions such as keyboarding.
