Essential Job Duties
Responsibilities include:
- Perform installations of equipment including set up, mounting, and connections such as power, water, pneumatic, steam, and others.
- Help start-up and troubleshoot equipment in the department.
- Perform and record preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Receive, prioritize, and execute work orders from faculty, staff, and graduate students.
- Work safely and assist with addressing safety concerns.
- Maintain good housekeeping and organization in the pilot plant, workshop, and storage areas.

Minimum Experience/Education
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Understand and use safe working and operating practices in all areas of work.
- Basic problem-solving skills necessary to repair, maintain, specify, operate, and troubleshoot teaching, research, and pilot plant equipment.
- Be able to provide diagnostic, repair, periodic maintenances, and simple installation services for processing and testing equipment such as motors, drive trains, gears, pumps, piping, tubing, valves, steam services, heaters, mixers, refrigeration units, ovens, compressors, and vacuum pumps and services.
- Have skills at or near Journey level in plumbing, welding, electrical, refrigeration, HVAC, and millwright and somewhat lower level in machining.
- Have demonstrated the ability to use basic hand and shop tools, manual and powered, for maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Must be able to properly operate and maintain a forklift, or have the ability to complete training to operate a forklift, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Instrumentation, machinery, and electronics experience.
- Ability to maintain and troubleshoot, or the ability to learn how to maintain and troubleshoot, the following types of equipment:
- Paper: small-scale process equipment (e.g. pumps, mixers, tanks, heaters, reactors)
- Woodworking equipment: saws, planer, CNC router, cold press, dust collection system
- Research: analytical instrumentation (chromatography, spectroscopy, thermal), environmental chambers, balances, centrifuges
- Miscellaneous: handle cryogenic liquids, machining, forklift
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a mechanic position maintaining laboratory equipment or pilot scale equipment
- Certificate from a technical school in a mechanical maintenance or similar area.
Required License or Certification
- Valid NC DL within 60 days of hire.
