Strategic Communications Manager

1. Summary
The Affordable Housing Institute (AHI), a US §501c3 public charity specializing in global affordable housing policy and finance, seeks a Communications Manager to work with to help us spread the word about affordable housing,
This role is ideal for a candidate with passion for and interest in affordable housing and change-making via visibility and persuasion through clear communications. It’s a job with opportunity for learning, growth, advancement and meaningful impact.
2. What this job is about
We have created this position to boost our ability to communicate widely why affordable housing is essential for modern society; how it is created through conscious policy, strategy, resources, and action; what we do to help make it happen; and what others can do, on their own or with us.
It’s aimed at building brand and message visibility through a regular, harmonized strategy across appropriate channels including social media, email marketing, website management, and other visibility activities such as webinars and publications.
3. Background on AHI
AHI is a non-profit impact consultancy and thought leadership firm specializing in global affordable housing policy and finance. Our mission is to help pro-poor innovators build healthy housing ecosystems worldwide. We have global impact by providing expertise on housing delivery, finance, and policy to pro-poor entities, public and private, non-profit and for-profit. AHI believes that access to better housing is key to improving communities, cities, and regions.
4. What the Communications Manager will do
Organizational Messaging:
· Work closely with senior executive team in developing quality external messaging that promotes the platform and our intellectual property consistent with our new strategic plan.
· Develop and implement a platform-scale communications strategy.
· Organize, and then mine, existing AHI intellectual property (IP), reports, and materials to identify and reshape content for effective external messaging.
· Work closely with the Senior Leadership and Operations Manager to design and track organizational and project impact/outcomes measurement for the purposes of effective external messaging.
· Develop and coordinate regular webinars or events to educate people to AHI's most impactful or innovative work. Create quarterly reports, AHI Activities, emailed to our global audience of interested readers, actors, allies, and friends.
· Plan and execute (2) fundraising email campaigns per year, with related social media campaigns and post-campaign donor management.
· Ensure that AHI's social media presence is active and additive by posting regular content on our LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.
· Track and consider the potential for AI to facilitate the above activities.
5. Experience/Skills
Candidates are not expected to have all of these skills, but as in many things in life, more is better.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· An interest in affordable housing delivery and policy.
· Curiosity and ability to learn and adapt quickly.
· An interest in nonprofit marketing and development.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Mailchimp, Donorbox, Wordpress, and various social media platforms.
· Experience with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and Figma.
· Ability to design and pursue efficient information-gathering and analysis.
· Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
· High level of responsibility and accountability for all tasks.
· High level of organization and attention to detail.
· Minimum of bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
· 5+ years experience in communications, marketing, or related field.
6. Positive Attributes

· Intellectual curiosity and strong desire to learn.
· Analytical rigor.
· A personality is highly recommended.
· Passion for housing, shelter, urban, and anti-poverty issues.
· Experience working or living in global-south urban environments (describe).
· Experience with, or interest in, international affairs, particularly housing policy.
· Nonprofit marketing experience in an academic, entrepreneurial, or institutional context.
· Comfortable with a variety of workplace relationships/structures: working collaboratively in teams, taking direction from others, being self-directed.
· Fluency in a language additional to English.
7. Details
This is a full-time position. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with ability and experience. AHI is currently working a hybrid schedule. Specific in-office/remote schedule is negotiable, though some regular presence in the Boston office is required.
