The NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is nationally and internationally known for leadership in comparative medicine and the ability to translate excellence in research, service, and training from animals to human health issues. The College succeeds by leveraging faculty access to our state-of-the-art veterinary teaching hospital, which serves over 32,000 veterinary patients a year, and close collaborations with the medical schools at Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Research Triangle Park, containing numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
Essential Job Duties
North Carolina State University invites applications for the position of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Chair in Translational Science & Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to advance human and animal health and welfare through the application of the most current research techniques addressing complex medical problems at one of the nation’s leading colleges of veterinary medicine. We are seeking a dynamic and transformational scientist to join our research teams. The William R. Kenan Distinguished Chair in Translational Science & Medicine will join and strengthen our research teams to provide transformational knowledge in comparative medicine and biomedical sciences. The discipline of interest for this position is expected to highlight and expand on already existing research strengths within the College of Veterinary Medicine, opening new frontiers in research and training for the future.
The William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Chair in Translational Science & Medicine will enhance the CVM’s abilities and expand our reach. The Professor will synergize with existing faculty to build an internationally-recognized program focused on developing integrated research methodology that improves medical care, particularly around the College and University’s current research strengths in infectious disease, genetics, gastroenterology, aging, regenerative medicine, cell, and neurobiology, amongst others. This individual will play an active role in training veterinary and graduate students by providing new perspectives on translational science and medicine.

- Apply cutting-edge scientific knowledge and techniques to develop impactful solutions for complex medical issues in humans and animals.
- Support and encourage leadership in comparative medicine; promote the ability to transfer excellence in research, service, and training from animals to human health.
- Leverage faculty access to our state-of-the-art veterinary teaching hospital to foster close collaborations between the CVM and other NC State groups, the medical schools at Duke and the University of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Research Triangle Park.
- Serve as an advocate for enhancing the abilities, visibility, and reach of the CVM’s research program and growing translational impact.
- Synergize with existing faculty to build an internationally recognized program focused on developing integrated research methodology that improves medical care, particularly around the College and University’s current strengths.
- Play an active role in training veterinary and graduate students by providing new perspectives on contemporary research approaches.
- Train graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows. Participate in didactic teaching at the graduate level and augment veterinary student education.
- Secure significant extramural funding for their independent research
- program and trainees.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Ph.D., DVM, or MD required
- Current rank of Tenured Associate Professor or Full Professor; or currently eligible or under evaluation for such rank.
- Record of impactful, translational research and excellence in funding.

The William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor in Translational Science & Medicine must possess the knowledge base, synergistic approach, and creative vision to build an internationally recognized program focused on developing integrated research methodology and translational impact.

- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience with extramurally funded research programs.
- A record of collegial and productive interactions with faculty, staff and students.
- Interest and enthusiasm for training and mentorship, particularly with regard to graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows.
- Comfort and experience working with and supporting highly interdisciplinary and collaborative faculty with an emphasis on biomedical and translational research.
- Strong desire to establish collaborative relationships both within the university and with the private and public sectors.
- Understanding and enthusiasm for the integral role of the research program in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Medical Doctorate (MD) or equivalent.
- A record of active participation in professional/scientific affairs and of teaching and/or research experience.
