Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Under general supervision, performs plumbing work at the journey level. Supports the plumbing and gas fitting needs of the campus, to include maintenance of the University’s underground utility and building interior distribution plumbing systems such as water, sanitary sewers and storm sewers with pipes ranging in diameter from 1/2” to 72”, and building interior natural gas systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
Four years progressively responsible experience in the plumbing trade.

Other:
Maryland State certification as a licensed plumber.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the theory, principles, methods and techniques used in the plumbing trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of OSHA regulations related to the plumbing trade; of plumbing codes, the requirements for domestic water and waste disposal systems.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the plumbing trade; in the installation and repair of sanitary plumbing and appliances; in welding, soldering, and threading pipe. 
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications; to prepare summaries and reports; to communicate effectively and follow directions; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Other:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

  • Through knowledge of and skill in the theory, principles, methods and techniques used in the pipe and gas fitting and plumbing trade, including valves, sewer, storm drain systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of OSHA/MOSH regulations related to the plumbing trade; of plumbing codes, the requirements for domestic water and waste disposal systems.
  • Working knowledge of computer-based maintenance management and cost estimating programs. 
  • Working knowledge of electric motors, controls, pumps, and wiring. Knowledge of electronic and direct digital control devices in the operation of specialized domestic and laboratory water systems and equipment.

Additional Certifications:

  • State of Maryland or Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) certification as a licensed Journeyman plumber; 
  • Certified w/cross-connect, back flow certification. 
  • Must possess and maintain a Driver’s License valid in the State of Maryland with fewer than 6 points.

Additional Information:

There are a total of 3 open vacancies: 
  • Plumber/Plumber Specialist/MT Multi Trades Chief I – Plumbing positions. An applicant could be considered for the Plumber Specialist position if they have at least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the plumbing and pipefitting trade experience with maintenance of hot water systems/components – (Plumber Specialist Salary: $56,773 – $68,128). 
  • An applicant could be considered for the MT Multi Trades Chief I – Plumbing position, if they have at least four (4) years progressively responsible experience in the trade(s) where assigned to include at least one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity. In a Non-Supervisory/Leader position, five (5) years of experience is required – .(MT Multi Trades Chief I – Plumbing Salary: $49,582 – $59,498).
  • Candidates must meet the minimum requirements of the position(s) of interest. There are two shifts available: Day Shift, 7 AM – 3:30 PM, and the Night Shift, 3 PM – 11:30 PM.

  • Incumbent is an Essential employee, subject to a 24 hour, 7 day week span of operation
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends when necessary. 
  • Must be able to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from lifts, ladders and scaffolding; to work at heights up to 20 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. 
  • Incumbent is required to wear safety footwear, provided by the University. 
  • Incumbent may be required to provide small hand tools; if so, the University is not responsible for the repair or replacement of lost or damaged items.
