Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland, College Park invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the University Libraries. The University is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and is the flagship of the University System of Maryland. Located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor within easy commuting distance of both the nation’s capital and the state capital, the University enjoys close proximity to the Library of Congress and National Archives as well as to numerous specialized libraries such as the Folger Shakespeare Library and the National Library of Medicine. The University ranks among the top 20 public universities, with over 35,000 students engaged in nationally and internationally recognized programs in undergraduate and graduate studies.
The University of Maryland Libraries comprise eight distinct libraries holding more than 3.5 million volumes and representing a diverse array of special collections, digital collections, and electronic resources: McKeldin Library (general collections), and separate branch libraries for architecture, performing arts, arts, special collections and archives, library media services, chemistry, engineering/physical sciences, and the Shady Grove branch. The Dean occupies a critical place in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) consortium of libraries, which shares services among sixteen institutions. The Libraries is an active member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), the HathiTrust, OCLC, and the Northeast Research Libraries Consortium, as well as state, regional and national consortia and organizations. Experience at a research University is preferred. Experience with fund raising and public relations. Candidate will need to have an understanding of digital technology trends. Skill in managing budgets is preferred.
