Job Description

The University of Notre Dame’s Echo Program is seeking a new Program Director to continue its work as a vibrant and innovative two year graduate service program dedicated to forming the next generation of leaders in faith formation. The new Echo Program Director will be blessed to work with talented students, committed university and ecclesial partners, and a dedicated staff. Echo’s highly regarded integral formation program is made possible in partnership with Notre Dame’s M.A. Theology Program and with Catholic dioceses, parishes and schools around the country and in Ireland. The Program Director for Echo works under the direction of the Associate Director of the McGrath Institute and oversees all aspects of the program. The Echo Program Director is responsible for the following:

Echo Staff Leadership & Supervision
  • providing annual goals and horizons for the Echo Program and staff during annual McGrath Staff Days directed by the Associate Director of the Institute;
  • convening Echo staff meetings and supervising a team of three Associate Directors who constitute the Echo formation team, including conducting regular supervision meetings and annual performance reviews;
  • working closely with Echo’s Senior Administrative Assistant on administrative and event processes and communicating with the Administrative Support Staff supervisor as needed;
  • collaborating regularly with the Institute’s Director of Undergraduate Engagement & Student Recruitment to establish annual Echo recruitment goals and materials and to help steward interview and admissions processes;

Echo Formation & Program Events
  • attending regular Echo formation team meetings to stay abreast of and respond to Echo student formation needs and partner realities as they arise;
  • guiding the Echo formation team in their development of the program’s Intellectual, Human, Communal, Spiritual and Professional Ministerial formation curriculum and events;
  • hosting, emceeing and contributing to program events such as Applicant Discernment Week events; Graduation, Mentor Weekend, formation retreats, etc.;

Echo Partnerships
  • working closely with the Director and Associate Director of the M.A. Theology Program at Notre Dame as well as with the Echo Associate Director for Intellectual Formation to sustain and develop the essential partnership between Echo and the M.A. Program;
  • sustaining existing diocesan partnerships and following up with prospective partner dioceses;
  • directing diocesan partnership renewal and orientation processes, including some travel and developing related partner materials with the McGrath Comms team;
  • evaluating diocesan partnerships and student placements on an ongoing and annual basis (policy development, partner agreements, placement profiles, diocesan leader and coordinator onboarding, bridge building and troubleshooting challenges as they arise);
  • representing the Echo Program to benefactors and University and ecclesial constituents;

McGrath Institute Engagement
  • participating in periodic McGrath Formation Area Program Director meetings convened by the Associate Director of the McGrath Institute and contributing to the development and articulation of McGrath’s formation curriculum;
  • participating in and contributing to the McGrath Institute’s Program Committee bi-semesterly meetings;
  • assisting with Notre Dame Vision interviews and admissions discernment each fall;
  • attending and volunteering occasional support of other McGrath events such as Advisory Council, Saturdays with the Saints, Institute conferences, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

A strong candidate will possess the following:

Education
  • an M.Div., M.A. in Theology, Catechetics, Pastoral Ministry or equivalent;
  • fluency in Catholic theology and a demonstrated ability to articulate and witness to the faith in compelling ways to diverse students, and university and ecclesial partners;

Professional Experience
  • seven or more years of professional leadership experience in Roman Catholic apostolates, including in holistic ministry leadership formation for young adults;
  • an understanding for the complexities within diverse ecclesial and parish catechetical landscapes and a demonstrated commitment to elevating the profile and value of parish life;
  • a desire to work at the crossroads of university and ecclesial life for the formation of young people engaged in ministerial service and exploring a vocation in lay ecclesial ministry and theological education;

Demonstrated Capacities
  • a demonstrated ability to supervise employees and foster a healthy work environment;
  • a demonstrated capacity for building trusting relationships with diverse and sometimes competing constituents, including an ability to bridge between and among academic, ecclesial and pastoral institutions and people;
  • exceptional organizational and communication skills;
  • a high level of personal and professional integrity;
  • deep pastoral and strategic sensibilities;
  • demonstrated problem solving and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

Professional Experience & Demonstrated Capacities
  • seven or more years of professional leadership experience in Roman Catholic parish and diocesan ministry;
  • experience with multicultural and multigenerational ecclesial communities;
  • fluency in Spanish; experience with Catholic ecclesial landscape beyond the United States;
  • experience in higher education, ministry formation and ecclesial service learning opportunities for young adults.
