Essential Job Duties

We are seeking a Locksmith I for an entry-level role. Under the guidance of a supervisor or senior locksmith, the Locksmith I will gain hands-on experience in various locksmith tasks, including lock repairs, installations, and master keying of small format interchangeable cores. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the trade and develop essential locksmithing skills.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist senior locksmiths with lock repairs, installations, and master keying.
  • Learn key blank identification, keying cores, and the installation of mortise locks, exit devices, and door closers.
  • Receive training on the proper use of key machines, code machines, and key punches.
  • Install locks and related hardware.
  • Learn to identify problems, analyze situations, and develop solutions under the guidance of a senior locksmith or supervisor.
  • Build knowledge to troubleshoot and repair issues efficiently and effectively.
  • Communicate with customers to understand their needs and explain the scope of work required.
  • Pay close attention to detail when working on projects to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • With supervision, coordinate tasks with faculty and staff, including project planning and scope of work.
  • Assist in preparing estimates and proposals, coordinating supplies with vendors, and maintaining clear communication with customers and shop personnel.
  • Learn to manage work within the allotted time and budget constraints for each project.
  • Help prepare job closeouts and arrange follow-up meetings with customers to ensure satisfaction.

Other Responsibilities

  • Once trained, may be required to be placed into the on-call rotation
  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Contributing level apprentice will be responsible for continuing education and license renewal requirements.
  • Perform and complete special assignments on time as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Must be able to support critical roles during adverse weather conditions and emergencies as they arise

Preferred Qualifications

  • This position will require special apprentice licenses within six months of hire and/or certification(s)

Required License or Certification

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
  • An apprentice locksmith license will be required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
