Assistant Manager for Small Animal Services

Job Description

ASSISTANT MANAGER FOR SMALL ANIMAL SERVICES, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to provide a range of support to the Assistant Director of Rodent Medicine administering the small animal veterinary technician services, including rodent (e.g. mouse, rat) and non-mammalian species. Will have oversight of the veterinary technical services in multiple animal facilities, located in several buildings on campus; supervise and coordinate small animal clinical and technical activities; coordinate the efforts of veterinary technicians who provide colony management, clinical, surgical support and technical services to investigators; serve as a liaison between DCM and investigators using small animals; supervise technical efforts to promote compliance with IACUC guidelines; provide oversight and backup for collecting samples, anesthesia support, maintenance of supplies and equipment to support procedures and investigator training; tracking test results, notifying investigators of relevant updates, initiating and/or cessation of breeding, initiating treatments, provision of clinical care as directed by a veterinarian, and updating colony management and other relevant documents; ensure that the veterinary technical team is properly trained to carry out their duties; and organize animal health assessment and pathogen testing for import/export needs in coordination with program veterinarian and administrative personnel.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, or related field and a minimum of three years applicable experience in a laboratory animal research setting or at least seven years of related experience; experience with animal handling; supervisory experience; robust organizational and leadership skills; exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to work with minimal supervision; and proficiency MS Office. PREFERRED: managerial experience; extensive experience working with rodents and other small animals; and LATg certification. Job #24505

Shifts on weekends and holidays will occur on rotation with other technical staff. Occasional after-hours work required.
