Financial Analyst

Job Description

The Department of Surgery is seeking a skilled Financial Analyst to manage and processes financial transactions including clinical, joint agreement, funds, general funds, and gift and discretionary accounts for the Department. Assists in the development of the annual Departmental budget and projection. Generates monthly financial reports and monitors revenues and expenditures for various business lines, including, but not limited to clinical funds, designated and discretionary funds, affiliated institution funds and general funds against budget. Performs comprehensive financial analysis relating to business or research trends to improve Departmental financial effectiveness and compliance with JHU. This position reports directly to the Assistant Administrator of Finance with a reporting relationship to the Financial Manager.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Compiles, analyzes and distributes monthly budget to actual reports to each division.
  • Compiles, analyzes and distributes monthly pro-fee charge and revenue reports and OR Case Volume reports, physician dashboards to each division.
  • Compiles, analyzes and distributes monthly reports on physician practices in the community hospitals.
  • Monitor and approve departmental expenditures throughout the fiscal year. This includes the fellowship program expenses. On a monthly basis review and reconcile expenditure statements for the division’s clinical, gift and discretionary accounts.
  • Perform variance analysis on assigned accounts. Monitors accounts throughout the Department for material variances.
  • Prepares ad hoc reports and analysis of clinical activity (financial, utilization, productivity, staffing, billing etc.)
  • Submit monthly financial transactions such as KB15N’s, journal entries, and non-payroll cost transfers within the Department and with JHH.
  • Monitor control salary on a monthly basis. Prepare and processes e-forms needed to reduce control salary.
  • Communicate and appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure that established procedures are followed. Provide instruction and answer questions relative to budget procedures and serve as liaison between Administration, and other unit areas.
  • Monitor and process transactions to correct Departmental Default accounts.
  • Reconcile faculty and staff payroll on a monthly basis.
  • Reconcile non-sponsored accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Assists in preparation of Department’s annual operating budget.
  • Coordinates and participates in the development of unrestricted funds budgets, including revenues and gift accounts.
  • Monitors expenditures throughout the budgetary period and identifies and communicates over expenditures to faculty and administrative staff.
  • Report appropriate clinical practice indicators to monitor faculty and staff performance to
  • include: staff productivity, space utilization, physician cancellation rates, show rates, cost per unit comparisons, patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, etc.
  • Provides cross coverage for all analyst positions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Is courteous and pleasant in person and on the telephone with coworkers, patients, visitors, and supervisors. Utilizes proper telephone etiquette.
  • Serves as a representative of the Department of Surgery outside of the confines of the Departmental office space.
  • Functions as a team player and works to maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers, peers and supervisors.
  • Recognizes where coworkers need assistance and takes initiative to help.


Scope of Responsibility

  • Know the formal and informal divisional goals, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the departments within University Administration and the academic divisions.
  • Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department, division, University and Hopkins Enterprise.


Decision Making

  • Carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision and at the direction of senior team members. Make decisions and establish work priorities on procedure-oriented operations.
  • Understand management question being asked and develop an analysis necessary to address the question (or appropriately modify the question so that the results are useful for decision-making).


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Three years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $53,800 - $94,400 Annually ($80,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
