Responsibilities*

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), University of Michigan (U-M), Ann Arbor, seeks outstanding scholars to apply for multiple full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions.  The positions are open to candidates of all ranks, including junior and senior-level appointments. The focus of our search this year is in the areas of thermal sciences and in dynamics, systems, and control. In thermal sciences the focus is on: (i) emerging combustion science topics including fire safety, fuels, engines, efficiency, conservation, power generation, sustainability, and pollutant emissions control; and (ii) thermal and electrochemical materials, devices, and systems research to defossilize heating and cooling. In dynamics, systems, and control we have two focus areas: (i) the nexus of clean energy and autonomy, and (ii) control and optimization of manufacturing for energy technologies. However, all who have strong backgrounds in disciplines relevant to mechanical engineering are welcome to apply. We are especially interested in individuals who are committed to developing research programs and engaging in undergraduate and graduate teaching while demonstrating a commitment to advancing equity, justice, and inclusion as well as eliminating systemic racism and sexism in STEM fields. The candidates' research, teaching, and inclusion statements should define common good or social justice as they apply towards their career goals.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants should have an earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related field.  We seek strong scholars who will provide inspiration, leadership, and impact in research, teaching, and service and contribute to the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of the University and Department.

The U-M Mechanical Engineering Department is the home of 60 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 15 research faculty, over 500 graduate students (around 280 Ph.D. students) and 700 undergraduate students. The U-M ME Department is well known for its strengths in major mechanical engineering core disciplines as well as in interdisciplinary and emerging thematic areas.
