Veterinary Technician

Job Description

 VETERINARY TECHNICIAN, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to provide clinical veterinary support and technical expertise for laboratory animals house at MIT in compliance with protocols and SOPs.  Will report necessary information to supervisor, clinical veterinarian, and researcher; administer treatments and supportive care; collect specimens for routine sentinel testing; provide colony management services such as ear tagging, weaning, tissue biopsy, and recordkeeping; provide technical services to investigators which may involve anesthesia support, aseptic preparation, necropsy and tissue collection, compound administration/injections, and blood collection; complete daily clinical rounds, assessing and monitoring the health of laboratory animals and investigator compliance with protocols and SOPs and reporting necessary information to supervisors, the clinical veterinarian, and the researchers; complete food/water regulation and post-surgery safeguard monitoring; and attend weekly meetings.  Training will be provided. The majority of work is with rodents. 

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  high school diploma or its equivalent; three years’ related experience; self-motivation; strong time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office; and laboratory animal handling experience.  PREFERRED:  undergraduate degree in animal science, biology, or related field; experience with anesthesia administration and pre- and post-operative animal care; and AALAS certification.  Job #24286-5
