Class Description

Lead Custodian I direct and coordinates a variety of cleaning and housekeeping tasks related to the upkeep of and maintaining a sanitary environment for the college facilities. Positions available on the following campuses:
  • Catonsville, 1st shift and 2nd shift (Mon-Fri)
  • Dundalk, 2nd shift (Mon-Fri)
  • Essex, 2nd shift (Mon-Fri)

Minimum Requirements

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. 
  2. Two (2) years minimum of institutional or commercial custodian experience.
  3. Previous supervisory experience.  
  4. Flexibility and ability to change shift when requested.
  5. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less than five (5) points on driving record.
  6. Ability to participate in bloodborne pathogens training within six (6) months of employment.
  7. Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.

Background Check
  • Candidates may be required to successfully pass a background investigation, to include driving, fingerprint and criminal history evaluation.
  • Candidates may be required to successfully complete a pre-hire, post-offer physical examination, including drug screening. 
This is an Essential Position and the employee must be available for building emergencies, and to perform regular duties or other assigned duties at times when the campus is closed to students and non-essential staff.  Subject to 24-hour standby or call-in for building emergencies. May be required to work overtime or special hours as needed or required.


Class Specific Essential Duties

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning practices, cleaning terms, and chemical usage and safety procedures related to hazardous substances.
  2. Knowledge of planning, organizing and coordinating all aspects of the overall custodial functions.
  3. Experience directing the work of others.
  4. Ability to detect or assess situations and to know when to take appropriate actions in case of an emergency.
  5. Ability to orally communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  6. Ability to listen and comprehend information and ideas presented through verbal communications.
  7. Ability to follow written and oral directions.
  8. Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  9. Ability to use mechanically powered cleaning equipment properly, safely and efficiently.
  10. Ability to perform physical job duties such as handling trash/recycling s, unloading supplies and moving heavy equipment and furniture.
  11. Must have the ability to work independently, without close supervision.
  12. Computer knowledge and experience.
  13. Due to nature of the position and frequent contact, candidates should have a command of the English language.

Position Specific Essential Duties

  1. Oversees the work performance of assigned custodians to ensure cleaning services are completed to department-defined standards.
  2. Maintains quality standards in accomplishment of non-routine cleaning and emergencies.
  3. Assigns personnel to established work area and project areas.
  4. Adjusts employee work schedules due to absences, vacant positions, or other interruptions to ensure daily work requirements are completed.
  5. Responds to stakeholder concerns/request and takes necessary action to resolve them including timely follow up.
  6. Instructs and assists staff in cleaning procedures, techniques, cleaning issues and in the use of new methods and products.
  7. Gives corrective instruction or re-training in the proper use of clean methods, equipment, and safety.  Conducts on-the-job training of staff, when needed and appropriate.
  8. Ensures that proper supply guidelines are followed and staff is trained in use of all chemicals.  Monitors safety of the workplace and ensures proper PPE are worn by staff.
  9. Responsible for conducting project work as directed by supervisor, either as an individual, or as a member of a work group, is completed in a timely manner.
  10. Reports supply and maintenance needs, and obtains and distributes supplies.
  11. Performs duties of a custodian, as needed or as directed.
  12. Participates in snow removal or duties as assigned in response to college emergencies, as necessary and/or directed. 
  13. Effectively performs in a service environment and follows all county, state, college and departmental policies, procedures and practices.
