The Department of Biological Sciences, within the College of Sciences at NC State University, is dedicated to research and teaching in a broad range of aspects of the biological sciences. About the GenX Exposure Study
The GenX Exposure Study is a high-profile, community-based cohort study examining environmental exposure to water contaminants in the Cape Fear River Basin across Wilmington, Fayetteville, and Pittsboro, North Carolina. This project brings together experts in epidemiology, exposure science, biostatistics, and community engagement to assess the health impacts of chemical exposure on local populations.
Our team collaborates closely with community partners to ensure study results are shared promptly with participants, fostering trust and transparency. The GenX study plays a critical role in advancing environmental health research and influencing public health policy. Essential Job Duties
The Department of Biological Sciences at NC State University invites you to join our team as an Epidemiologic Study Manager for the GenX Exposure Study—a pivotal research initiative focused on understanding environmental exposure to water contaminants and its impact on North Carolina communities. In this role, you will support comprehensive research efforts, ensure high-quality data collection and management, employ best practices for sample storage and tracking, and contribute to meaningful community engagement. Your contributions will be instrumental in advancing environmental health science and influencing public health initiatives that support safer, healthier communities.
Primary duties of the GenX Study Manager include, but are not limited to the following:
Data Collection and Management
- Develop and implement data collection standards and procedures to ensure accuracy and integrity (SOPs).
- Oversee the creation and maintenance of surveys and databases in Qualtrics and SQL.
- Organize community sample collection events which involve collection of questionnaire data, biological specimens, and anthropometric measurements.
- Manage biological specimen storage with tracking software.
- Collaborate with study data manager to ensure timely access and long-term security of study data.
Regulatory Compliance
- Serve as the primary contact for the Institutional Review Board and manage project submissions in a timely manner.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and supervise undergraduate research assistants involved in data collection and analysis.
- Provide guidance and resolve technical and program-related issues for staff and collaborators.
Project Coordination and Support
- Manage study equipment maintenance and inventory tracking with study team members.
- Document and support communication with study participants, community members, and stakeholders.
- Contribute to future planning for study direction and activities to achieve study goals.
Financial Oversight
- Assist with budgeting, monitor expenditures, and recommend adjustments to ensure financial compliance.
- Contribute to grant proposal preparation, including budget creation
Minimum Education and Experience
- MS or MPH in epidemiology or other relevant subjects (degree must be completed)
- 5-8 years of previous research experience
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience designing and conducting large-scale research projects with community involvement.
- Strong background in epidemiology and/or environmental health science.
- Experience in technical and scientific report preparation.
- Proficiency in using data management platforms, particularly Qualtrics and SQL.
- Familiarity with human subjects research protocols and compliance regulations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively with various groups.
- Experience in community engagement, particularly with underserved populations.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for fieldwork, including some weekend and evening commitments

- Spanish fluency
