Job Summary:
The role of the Campus Safety Officer supports the mission of Regis University by contributing to the safety and security of the campus community and through the development of positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, guests and visitors. Additionally, all employees of the Department of Campus Safety are committed to maintaining a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for and development of skills to effectively engage with diverse individuals and communities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Patrol buildings and grounds of the University campus, by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot, on a continuous, daily basis in order to identify and assess situations that may impact the safety and security of the University community.
2. Act as an incident commander in response to campus emergencies, reports of crimes, and incidents including medical/mental health emergencies, natural disasters, trespassing, intrusion alarms, burglaries, robberies thefts, drug and alcohol incidents, fire alarms, energy management alarms, assaults, threats of violence, disturbances, and emergency facilities problems. Locate, identify, evaluate and act upon the source or cause of the situation, effectively resolve/assist in the situation, and coordinate as needed with the appropriate resources needed such as police, fire, EMTs, or internal departments such as Physical Plant or Information Technology Services.
3. Enforce all University policies, student conduct regulations, and appropriate Federal, State, and local laws as necessary to ensure compliance by the Regis community and its visitors. Investigate incidents on campus as needed in order to provide for immediate safety needs, and proper handling of the incident and its aftermath as appropriate.
4. Maintain regular contact with appropriate law enforcement agencies, University staff offices, and off-campus departments as needed, to guarantee clear and timely exchange of information. These entities include, but are not limited to, the Office of Student Life, Residence Life and Housing, Health and Counseling Services, Physical Plant Operations, Public Information/Media Relations (as needed), Adams County Sheriff, and the Denver Police Department.
5. Prepare clear and thorough written incident reports as necessary or appropriate. Give testimony at judicial hearings when requested.
6. Participate in staff training activities, workshops and departmental meetings as needed in order to maintain current knowledge and certification of essential campus safety practices and procedures.
7. Assist individuals on campus, including assistance with stranded/locked vehicles, escorting individuals from buildings and to vehicles and providing safety and security information to the campus community.
8. Provide security services for special events, such as gate control, crowd control, parking control, locking and unlocking rooms for meetings, etc.
Required Competencies:
Critical Thinking: Incorporates all facts available in an incident to make decisions ranging from the handling of the current situation to summoning other resources within the University and external resources, such as emergency personnel.
Decision Making: Must make prompt and effective decisions to resolve situations in a safe and timely manner.
Communication: Must use clear and concise communication across a variety of channels, including the Regis RU Alert mass notification system, radio system, telephone, in-person and written communication.
Attention to Detail: Attention to detail in communication and clerical tasks are necessary to avoid compromising safety and security systems and to prevent undue risk to the University.
Relationship Building: Develops positive relationships with students, faculty, staff and the Regis community through regular interactions, participation in community events and community outreach programs.
Inclusive Environment: Promotes an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hiring.
- One (1) year of law enforcement, campus safety or security experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, whether security-related or not, as determined by the Director. Successful candidates will be required to provide transcripts pertaining to formal education.
- Must successfully pass FBI criminal background check.
- Must have a current and valid driver's license and be approved as an authorized driver by the University prior to recommendation for hire and be insurable under University guidelines.
- Must be able to obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License prior to performing job duties as a Campus Safety Officer. The documents required to obtain this license from the Department of Excise and License consist of:
- Certificate of Security Guard Training Completion completed within the last 60 days (16 hours)
- Certificate of Physical and Mental Fitness completed within the last 60 days
- Copy of Valid State or Federally Issued Identification
- Head-shot that meets Badging Criteria
- Letter of Hire from your intended employer completed within the last 60 days
- Affidavit of Criminal and Employment History
- FBI background check run within the past 60 days
Applicants will submit each of these documents to the City and County of Denver Department of Excise and License. The Campus Safety Department will provide the applicant with a Letter of Hire once a conditional offer of employment is made. Successful employment with Regis University Campus Safety Department is contingent upon the applicant obtaining a Security Guard License from the Department of Excise and License. Applicants who, for whatever reason, fail or are disqualified to receive the required Security Guard License will have the conditional offer of employment rescinded and will not be hired.
The Campus Safety Department may reimburse an applicant who successfully obtains a Security Guard License for the Application fee ($25.00) and License fee ($25.00) and will pay the cost of the FBI background check if the applicant has not had one run within the 60 days prior to being made the conditional offer of employment. The Campus Safety Department will not reimburse any other expenses incurred as a result of this process.
Every Campus Safety Officer must annually renew his/her Security Guard License. The documents required for renewal of a Security Guard License by the City and County of Denver Department of Excise and License consist of:
- A Letter of Hire from the Campus Safety Department
- A Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check run within the past 60 days
- A Certificate of Security Guard Training Completion completed within the past 60 days (8 hours)
The Campus Safety Department will pay the License Renewal fee ($25.00) and the cost of the CBI background check and will provide the eight (8) hour Security Guard Training Completion class. Must have completed or be capable of completing within 60 days of employment FEMA courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800.
Skills:
1. First Aid/CPR/AED.
2. Pressure Point Control and Arrest Tactics (PPCT) or other law enforcement/security self- defense tactics, including the proper use of the expandable baton, chemical defense spray and handcuffs. These skills will be demonstrated at minimum annually during mandatory recertification training. Any Campus Safety Officer failing to adequately demonstrate proficiency with any weapon or equipment will not be allowed to carry that item. Repeated failure to demonstrate proficiency or a refusal to attend training or to carry any piece of equipment may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
3. Strong verbal/written communication skills in order to interact with student, staff, and faculty and with outside agencies.
4. Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills and high public interaction.
The employee should be able to attain adequate performance after three months on the job and proficiency within six months, including on-the-job training and contact with the campus safety supervisors and staff. NOTE: The 16 or 8-hour Security Guard Training Completion classes required by the Department of License and Excise must be completed in accordance with the timeline set by that agency. No weapons (expandable baton, chemical defense spray) will be carried or used by any Campus Safety Officer unless he/she is trained in their use by a certified instructor.
Physical and Mental:
It is the policy of the Department of Campus Safety that all uniformed officers maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job related tasks that they may be called upon to do in the performance of their duties. In accordance with the requirements of obtaining a Security Guard license, a medical exam and accompanying tests will be administered by a health care provider at the time the Security Guard license is obtained, and prior to acceptance of employment by the department. It is the responsibility of the Campus Safety Supervisor to remain in such physical condition that they can successfully maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk unassisted, and run, climb stairs and may lift and/or move 50 pounds or more, such as when moving incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances. Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to driver's license standards, close vision, distance vision, night vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Campus Safety Officers must possess the ability to hear for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job.
Work Schedule:
Day shift hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
