Essential Job Duties

The position is primarily focused on the genotype and phenotype characterization of Fusarium, a large genus of filamentous fungi that are known to produce the mycotoxin, fumonisin. Genotype characterization will involve culturing fungi, extracting DNA, and performing PCR reactions for Sanger or nanopore sequencing to genotype numerous strains of Fusarium.  Phenotype characterization will include assaying Fusarium strains to quantify their levels of fumonisin production, via HPLC.  Genotype and phenotype data will be analyzed using bioinformatics pipelines that are currently under development in our laboratory.  In addition to characterization and data analysis, the employee will assist with the preparation of a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
