This position is housed within the Structural Pest Extension, Research and Training (SPERT) Program. Our mission is to engage, empower, and equip the structural pest management industry and residents of North Carolina to address pests in and around the built environment. In support of this mission, the primary responsibilities of this position are two-fold:
- To support the ongoing urban pest research in the Hayes structural pest research lab. You will accomplish this through insect colony maintenance, working with insecticides of known and unknown toxicity, developing and conducting bio- and behavioral assays, and meeting additional research needs in the lab and field as they arrive.
- To support and assist in the development and day-to-day operations of the NC State Structural Pest Management Training & Research Facility, under the direction the facility director. You will accomplish this through assisting in the development and delivery of training and certification courses to the pest management and chemical manufacturing industries, as well as through hands-on demonstration and guidance in current pest management practices. In this role you will regularly interface with the pest management industry, and pest management conditions which may be challenging to some individuals. Physical exertion in the form of, but not limited to, carrying tank sprayers, wearing and demonstrating backpack sprayers, foundation trenching, augers, and crawling under and around built structures is likely in this role.
Days and hours per day are flexible based on shifting need and the selected individuals preference.

- B.S. Degree in Entomology
- 2-3 years of research experience related to structural pest management
- Experience working with insecticides and repellents to test product efficacy in arthropod systems
- Experience teaching or working with the pest management industry, either in an academic capacity or as a pest management professional
- Experience and comfort presenting research findings across a broad audience, including academics and industry professionals
Required License or Certification
