Nursing Supervisor (Trauma Burn Unit/Wound-Ostomy)

Job Summary

The nursing supervisor will provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice within the Trauma Burn Unit  and Wound-Ostomy Care Unit. 

Participate as an active member of the leadership team focusing on daily staffing, scheduling as well as operational needs.  

Additionally, the nursing supervisor will play an active role in recruitment efforts, hiring, continuous quality improvement, safety, customer service, education, and research. 

To participate as a member of the leadership team to provide and continually improve health care services and to support the mission and goals of the health system. 

To ensure the quality of nursing services provided to patients. The ideal candidate will be firm yet personable, a strong leader, with the ability to set high standards and hold people accountable for meeting unit performance and patient care standards. 

They will have process an improvement background and demonstrated ability as a change agent. 

Prior experience in nursing leadership is preferred.

Responsibilities*

Personnnel Management:
Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Nurse Manager.

Clinical Practice:
Rotate to the off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the nurse manager.
Provide patient care on a regularly scheduled basis and maintain clinical expertise.
To provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.

Management of Clinical Area:
Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the nurse manager. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation.
Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care.
Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research:
Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Required Qualifications*

Required Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing.

Desired Qualifications*

Previous supervisory experience.
Minimum of two years of Trauma/Burn experience
Master of Science Nursing.
Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
Consultative and teaching skills.
Certification/instructor in ABLS, ACLS, PALS

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 40 hours/ 5 days per week 
Shift: All shifts and weekends will be required based on unit needs. 
Location: University Hospital Trauma Burn ICU
