The purpose of the position is to determine (1) per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in air, groundwater and deposition samples collected near the Chemours Fayetteville Works facility and (2) improve the understanding of the atmospheric fate and transformations of select PFAS emitted there. The candidate will help advance sampling and analytical methods for the determination of gas- and condensed-phase PFAS concentrations in air by selecting and evaluating passive sampling approaches and by using and modifying targeted and non-targeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods. Furthermore, the candidate will conduct laboratory experiments to assess PFAS partitioning between air/water/organic media and explore the kinetics and products of oxidation of select compounds.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- The candidate will collect and analyze air samples and be familiar with techniques for active and passive sampling of atmospheric trace substances.
- The candidate will evaluate passive sampling approaches and lead lab and field characterization of a selected design to be deployed near Fayetteville Works.
- The candidate will use and modify LC-MS and GC-MS methods to conduct analyses to determine PFAS concentrations in field-collected and laboratory experimental samples.
- The candidate will conduct oxidation flow reactor and phase partitioning experiments to assess PFAS physicochemical properties and their evolution during simulated atmospheric aging.
Other Work/Responsibilities
- Lead writing of peer-reviewed manuscripts
- Support field data collection activities completed as part of this project.
- Support maintenance of LC-MS and GC-MS systems and train students on the use of LC-MS and GC-MS systems for PFAS analysis.
- Train graduate and undergraduate students in sampling, analysis and in operating laboratory reactor systems.
- Help with writing of grant applications
