Assistant Professor, Anthropology and Archaeology, 1-Year Visiting Position

College of Wooster

Job Description

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Program in Archaeology at The College of Wooster invite applicants for a one-year position as a visiting assistant professor of Anthropology and Archaeology for the 2024-2025 academic year (with the potential for renewal).

Qualifications

We are seeking a broadly trained anthropological archaeologist who can teach introductory courses in anthropology (four-field approach) and archaeology, mid-level courses in archaeology (such as archaeological method and theory and courses that incorporate the scholar’s area of specialization) and a mid-level course in anthropology (possibilities might include bioarchaeology/forensic anthropology, political anthropology, or a cultural area course). Geographical and topical areas of expertise outside of Latin America are open. A successful candidate will also advise students in junior and senior theses. A Ph.D. in anthropology and teaching experience are desirable. We welcome applicants whose expertise will deepen our curricular commitments to decolonial theories and methods in anthropology in hopes that our department can foster meaningful community engagement.

Application Instructions

The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. We enroll a racially, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse student population of approximately 1,960 undergraduate students, of which 6% identify as Latinx; 10%, as Black/African American; 4%, as Asian; 4%, as multiracial; and 60%, as white. Fifteen percent (15%) of our students are studying on international visas. Twenty-five percent (25%) are Pell-eligible and 12% are first-generation college students. We are interested in hiring faculty who can contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the community through culturally relevant pedagogy, curricular diversity, intercultural fluency, and a commitment to ensuring equitable outcomes for racially and ethnically minoritized and marginalized student groups.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, evidence of strong teaching, a diversity statement, and three names of references through Interfolio. The diversity statement should detail how the applicant has engaged and/or expects to engage with issues of diversity in the classroom and the curriculum, as well as on campus and in the broader community.

If you have questions regarding Interfolio, please contact Santha Schuch, Administrative Coordinator, Sociology and Anthropology Department, at sschuch@wooster.edu. Questions about the position should be directed to Heather Fitz Gibbon at hfitzgibbon@wooster.edu or Olivia Navarro-Farr at onavarro-farr@wooster.edu. Review of applications will begin on February 15.
