About the role
The Aviation Training Ground Theory Instructor role is primarily based at RAAF Base Point Cook and comprises of two significant operational requirements:
Learning & Teaching
Aviation Ground Theory classes teach students the knowledge to support the practical flying and help them prepare for the program and regulatory examinations in accordance with the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASRs). The Ground Theory Instructor is responsible for working within the RMIT Aviation Academy and is responsible for delivering course material, assessing students and the supervision of students enrolled in theory courses. The role requires high participation in the continuing reviews of course content along with development and delivery of teaching methods and methods of students' assessment.

- Basic Aircraft Knowledge (BAK)
- Flight Rules and Air Law
- Air Transport Pilot Licence Theory
- Navigation
- Human Factors
- Aircraft General Knowledge
- Meteorology
- Aerodynamics Operations
- Performance and Planning
Student Coordination
This component of the role is to support students to complete their program on time by overseeing and managing their progress. This includes the operational interface between the student, the flying schedule and theory delivery timetable. You will also provide students with motivational support, mentoring and general remedial training support.
You will interact with industry partners external organisations, industry groups and RMIT teaching and administration staff. Your performance will be underpinned by participation in relevant activities which ensure your vocational competence meets and/or exceeds the education level being delivered and assessed.
To be successful in this position, you will meet the following Key Selection Criteria:
- Extensive experience delivering Pilot Ground Theory Instruction within the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASRs) or Defence Aviation Safety Authority regulatory requirements for Aircrew operations.
- Knowledge of the aviation and flight training industry and educational principles.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills relevant to teaching and consultancy environments. This includes effective presentation and facilitation skills, and in the use of flexible teaching methods.
- Skills and experience in competency-based assessment including developing flight training learning resources, working within Learning Management Systems, and blended learning environments.
- Ability in ensuring current and contemporary vocational competence meets and/or exceeds the education level being delivered and assessed.
- Capacity to diagnose learning problems in students, propose and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to contribute effectively as a constructive and proactive member of a team.
- Skills in the use of relevant information and communication technologies, preferably experience using a Learning Management System such as CANVAS and extensive use of Microsoft Office 365 suite of products.
Qualifications
Mandatory:
- Minimum Commercial Pilot Licence (Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating and ATPL CASA exam credits Preferred), or military equivalent.
- Minimum 500hrs flying experience.
- AQF6 (Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree) or above Tertiary Qualification
Highly Desirable:
- TRE/TRI qualified either (current or historically)
- Current Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40116).
Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check. For this position Australian Citizenship will be required.
