Essential Job Duties

North Carolina State Extension has received a five (5) year project from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent obesity in 10 counties in central and eastern NC. A primary goal for this project is to engage and leverage community extension to implement evidence-based strategies for food and nutrition security, safe and accessible physical activity, and early care and education settings.

The Extension Scholar (1.0 FTE) in the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences at NC State University to support project management and activities. The individual will be responsible for providing organization and programmatic oversight for the project occurring in the 10 previously identified counties; managing four Community Fellows located in county clusters; coordinating evaluation efforts (working with the Project Evaluator); leading communication efforts at the county level including development of key messaging through social media and news stories; and overseeing communication with project participants and stakeholders. The scholar must be organized and dependable and have excellent communication skills.

Essential job duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintain timely communication with the PI team, County-level Extension staff, Program Evaluator, Community Liaisons, and other partners on all activities, including but not limited to scheduling regular meetings, creating meeting agendas, maintaining notes, and communicating critical next steps with internal and external teams
  • Organize the program calendar and list of community partners, including individuals who contact the program for additional information, resources, etc.
  • Arrange schedules and plans for county-level community assessments, activities, and programming.
  • Assist and advise the PI team on administrative oversight of grant operations.
  • Train student volunteers and employees in areas including, but not limited to, ethics, evaluation methods, and community-based evaluation strategies with support from the Project Evaluator.
  • Provide oversight to undergraduate and graduate students employed by the project, including but not limited to scheduling, delegating roles, and providing evaluation.
  • Recruit community members to participate in evaluation activities related to program strategies across the state of North Carolina
  • Provide FEEd Lab partners with ongoing technical (online and in-person) support related to supported programming.
  • Obtain consent in person or virtually from all participants in research activities, including focus groups, interviews, or other intervention components (as needed depending on project strategies)
  • In collaboration with the Program Evaluator, develop application materials for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) through NC State
  • Manage a university P-card and all purchasing needs (e.g., equipment, supplies); Ensure purchases comply with restrictions set by funders and/or University policies.
  • Conduct all travel arrangements for self, Director, and larger team (e.g., creating Travel Authorizations in MyPackPortal, purchasing flights, hotels, conference fees, initiating reimbursements, facilitating AP104s)
  • Lead public messaging strategies and the publication process of program outcomes through social media, news articles, technical reports, peer-reviewed journals, and other outlets as determined by the PI team, county-level staff, and the community.
  • Provide information about the project and outcomes to the general public
  • Coordinate and maintain social media and website content
  • Provide input on marketing and media as needed
  • Attend regular national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and internal Strategy area meetings; maintain detailed notes and record-keeping using Google Drive
  • Maintain the team’s Project Management system, including effectively using the system to track project progress.
  • Provide training to Extension personnel statewide on project strategies, materials, and implementation.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Department Required Skills

  • Must hold a Ph.D. in nutrition, public health, or a related field.
  • Must be able to conduct a systematic literature review, administrate IRB protocols, develop grants, employ qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and have a grounding in health promotion programming, and policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change.
  • Must have capacity in network building, coordinating inter-institutional teams, and communicating research to the community at large.
  • Experience working with culturally, linguistically, and socio-economically diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management is expected.
  • Ability to design data-gathering instruments; prepare and manage large databases, prepare, analyze, and draw conclusions from data; make oral and written presentations on the analysis of a project for public and professional audiences
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, team building, problem-solving ability, networking skills, and ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint), Canva Pro, and/or Adobe Suite, and Google applications.
