POSITION TITLE: GENOMICS CORE FACILITY - SR. Dir.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Genomics Core Facility, Sr Director oversees daily operation of the Genomics Core Facility, including: development of operating procedures, and providing researchers with consultation and support in experimental design and execution of Next-Generation Sequencing projects, including those using related technologies (e.g., single cell genomics assays, spatial profiling). When appropriate, engages in collaborative research with faculty and outside users.

JOB POSTING SUMMARY

We have an exciting opportunity for a Core Director of the the Genomics Core Facility at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, home to some of the world's most renowned scientists. This is a great opportunity for an experienced individual to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in collaborating to contribute to the development of concepts and principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways. The individual would have the opportunity to determine operating policies and procedures that will streamline processes in the Genomics Core Facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Proficient in collaborating with diverse research labs, offering expertise in advising, guiding, and providing grant writing support for Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) projects.
  • Capable of delivering scientific and budgetary oversight, regularly reporting core budget status and projections to upper management. Proactively anticipates capital equipment needs and staffing requirements.
  • Oversee lab Biosafety (up to BSL2+), ensuring compliance with IRB and EH&S regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with long read technologies such as Pac Bio or Oxford Nanopore.
  • Extensive working knowledge of NGS library preparation strategies including the use of commercially available kits for DNA and RNA and ability to design custom library prep approaches to unique sequencing problems.
  • Possess in-depth expertise in single-cell assays utilizing 10X Genomics technology.
  • Proficiency with spatial profiling technologies such as NanoString GeoMX and 10X Visium systems.
  • Working knowledge of nucleic acid enzymology and biochemistry including polymerases, ligases, kinases and nucleases.
  • Extensive knowledge of nucleic acid evaluation including DNA/RNA quantitation and quality assessment using Qubit, Bioanalyzer2100, Tapestation, Nanodrop and gel electrophoresis.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of sample indexing strategies, the judicious use of UMIs where applicable, and proficiency in data demultiplexing operations.
  • Lead and support a highly technical staff.
  • Proficient in coordinating, prioritizing, and troubleshooting multiple complex NGS projects across stages, including planning, experimental design, budgeting, execution, and technical interpretation of sequencing results.
  • Experience with extraction of DNA/RNA from cells/tissues in up to a BSL2+ environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ph.D. with background in Molecular Biology, Genetics or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience of progressive, cumulative experience in genomic analysis
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years' experience with Illumina sequencing technology, with a preference for expertise with the NextSeq2000 and/or NovaSeq6000.
  • Familiarity with informatics and computation tools associated with Next-Generation Sequencing.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and interact with faculty, scientific staff, and support department employees at all levels exchanging information, providing instruction/training, and interpreting research results as appropriate.
  • Previous management experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles of molecular and cellular biology.
  • Possess excellent skills in experimental design and understanding of data analysis strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures. Utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE).

COMPENSATION: The expected hiring range for this position is $138,000 to $165,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
