About the Department

The College Success and Well-Being department is located within the College of Sciences, Dean’s Office. The College of Sciences (COS) is home to six departments: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Biological Sciences, and Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. In addition, there are several Centers focused on research and graduate student training (Bioinformatics Research Center, Center for Research in Scientific Computation), as well as strong outreach efforts, such as the Science House and strong partnership with the State Museum of Natural Sciences. The State Climate Office of North Carolina is also part of the college. The faculty, staff, and students of the College of Sciences are committed to excellence in research, teaching and learning, and public service. Our focus on multi-disciplinary collaboration builds a foundation of experience that well prepares students for the real world. Our undergraduates work alongside faculty and graduate students on research teams exploring some of today’s most exciting scientific challenges. The college provides instruction in the sciences to thousands of students enrolled in the many other colleges at NC State.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director for Strategic Community Engagement will be crucial in creating and supporting initiatives to support faculty, staff, and students within the College of Sciences. This position will provide an opportunity for a motivated candidate to contribute to the creation of initiatives for students, faculty, and staff that create programming initiatives that will support instruction, academic achievement, career development, and community building. This position will report to the Associate Dean for College Success and Well-Being and will be responsible for Program Development and Implementation, Collaboration and Outreach, and Assessment and Feedback.

Scope of work will include:
Program Development and Implementation:
  • Coordinate and support community initiatives within the College of Sciences.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and executing workshops, seminars, and events aimed at community building led by the Dean’s office or the Office for College Success and Well-Being.
  • Plan, create, coordinate, market, deliver, and assess a diverse range of programs promoting the success and well-being of all College of Sciences students, faculty, and staff.
  • Design and implement initiatives that foster a sense of community and belonging among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive success and well-being program aligned with NC State’s wellness framework.
  • Promote wellness and inclusivity best practices across the College, emphasizing the importance of individual dignity, personal growth, empathy, and holistic development.

Outreach and Communication:
  • Maintain effective communication channels to promote community engagement programs, including designing and creating flyers, program guides, promotional material, and other graphic assets for events, with consistent branding and awareness of differing community needs.
  • By understanding the audience and goals and developing a communications plan, this position will work with college-level communications to maintain effective communication channels and promote community engagement programs. This includes creating and designing flyers, program guides, promotional material, and other graphic assets for events, with consistent branding and awareness of differing community needs.
  • Utilize multiple channels to reach the target audience, including but not limited to email newsletters, social media, campus websites, and physical postings.

Teaching Support:
  • Assist the Associate Dean for College Success and Well-Being with COS 110
  • This will involve teaching support, grading assignments, helping with classroom activities, and providing support to students.

Wellness Days Planning and Implementation:
  • Define clear goals for the programs, such as increasing awareness of various resources, encouraging physical activity, or providing relaxation techniques, and will determine the budget for the event or program, including costs for speakers, materials, marketing, and any other expenses.
  • Will prepare reports summarizing the event or program’s success, challenges faced, and recommendations for future events and programs.

Resilience Leadership Program Development:
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean to create programming that focuses on helping students develop resilience in the face of academic and personal challenges.
  • Train and equip students with leadership skills that will help them manage stress, lead teams, and navigate complex situations.
  • Promote overall well-being, including mental, emotional, and physical health.
  • Develop content that covers topics such as stress management, time management, effective communication, and conflict resolution.
  • Collect feedback from participants regularly to assess the program’s effectiveness and foster a community where students can share experiences and strategies for resilience.

Connect students with transitional and high-impact experiences across the university:
  • Connect students with experiences related to resilience and leadership, which can be achieved through a variety of methods, and will use emails, newsletters, and announcements through student portals to share information about the program.
  • Will highlight key events, workshops, and success stories and leverage social media platforms to reach students where they are most active.
  • Create/develop guides or toolkits that students can refer to for tips on resilience, leadership, and well-being. Will also share digitally or physically engaging content, such as videos, infographics, and testimonials.
  • Establish mentorship opportunities where students can connect with faculty, alumni, or industry professionals for guidance and support.
  • Regularly gather feedback to understand needs and preferences and adjust accordingly.

Event Planning and Management:
  • Assist in planning College of Sciences celebrations and events: Packapalooza, Senior Recognition Celebration, Open House, Wolfpack Welcome Week, Winter Welcome Week, Faculty, Staff, and Postdoctoral Scholar Appreciation Events.
  • Assist with planning college celebrations and events involves a range of tasks aimed at ensuring that each event runs smoothly, meets its objectives, and provides a memorable experience for participants.
  • Develop and manage a budget for each event to ensure all expenses are covered. Coordinate and work with various departments, such as the Counseling Center, Wellness and Recreation, facilities, catering, college departments/units, and security (if needed), to ensure smooth execution. Coordinating and preparing/training College of Sciences Ambassadors.
  • Collect feedback from attendees to improve future events.
  • Use a mix of digital and physical promotional materials to ensure high visibility of events and programs. Duties to carry out these tasks will also include:
    -Program Development: Assist in developing the event program, including speeches, awards presentations, and entertainment. Coordinate with speakers and award presenters.
    -Logistics: Plan event layout, assist with logistics such as setting up event spaces, arranging transportation, and ensuring that all necessary equipment is in place.
    -Promotional Materials: Create flyers, brochures, and digital content to promote programs and events
    -Problem-Solving: Address any issues or last-minute changes that arise during the planning or execution phases of programs and events.

Leadership Training and Support:
  • Provide guidance and assist in advising and leadership training for the following student groups such as the the Society for Multicultural Scientists and the College of Sciences Ambassadors.
  • Will provide guidance by being available for student leaders from the Society for Multicultural Scientists and the College of Sciences Ambassadors, offering advice and support for their organizational needs.
  • In addition, the position will design and deliver leadership training sessions aimed at developing the student’s leadership skills, empowering them to be more effective in their roles within these organizations.

Recruitment and Program Assessment:
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the College Success and Well-Being’s programming which is crucial for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with programming that aids in the recruitment of students to the College of Sciences.
  • Perform assessments for College of Success and Well-Being programming by conducting surveys and focus groups to evaluate programmatic effectiveness.
  • Will determine and assess the overall satisfaction, program impact, specific outcomes, and areas for improvement. T
  • Will identify key indicators such as participant satisfaction, engagement levels, perceived benefits, and areas needing improvement.
  • Will provide a high-level overview of key findings and recommendations that include detailed data and analysis from both surveys, focus groups, and other ways to evaluate programmatic effectiveness.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute multiple events and initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills: oral, written, and presentation.
  • Comfortable speaking to various groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of and experience in promoting access for student populations within educational settings.
  • Maturity and ability to interact with students at varying developmental stages in a confidential environment.
  • Proficiency in creating promotional materials using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or other graphic design software.
  • Demonstrated experience in helping create programming for community building for students, faculty, staff, or postdoctoral scholar success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience involving event coordination, community engagement, and program management.
  • Experience in teaching or providing academic support, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • 2 – 5 years of higher education student engagement experience.
  • Experience advising a student organization.
  • Familiarity with university-level resources and services that support student, faculty, and staff success and well-being.
