Job Description

The Groundskeeper plays a vital role in maintaining the beauty and functionality of the Notre Dame campus. This position is responsible for a variety of landscape and grounds maintenance tasks, ensuring that all outdoor areas are safe, attractive, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors.

What You’ll Do
  • Turf Management: Mow and maintain all turf areas on campus to ensure a healthy and vibrant landscape.
  • Leaf Management: Remove and recycle leaves in a timely manner to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the campus.
  • Tree Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, including trimming and removal of trees as necessary.
  • Shrub Care: Trim and maintain all shrubs to promote healthy growth and enhance campus landscaping.
  • Irrigation Maintenance: Manage and maintain irrigation systems, including the operation of computerized equipment and coordination with related contractors.
  • Landscape Maintenance: Clean and mulch all landscape beds, ensuring they are tidy and well-kept.
  • Waste Management: Conduct regular trash removal across the campus to promote a clean environment.
  • Aeration and Fertilization: Aerify and fertilize lawns as needed to promote healthy grass growth.
  • Pesticide Application: Apply pesticides in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily and routine maintenance on landscape and grounds equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Operate heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, backhoes, large trucks, tractors, Bobcat Toolcat, high rangers, limb chippers, and other landscape-related machinery.
  • Landscape Installation: Assist in the installation and renovation of landscaping projects, including floral displays, by reading and interpreting blueprints and platbooks.
  • Snow Removal: Manage snow and ice removal from all roadways, sidewalks, and parking lots during winter months to ensure safety.
  • Emergency Response: Participate in storm damage cleanup and other emergency response tasks as needed.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall maintenance and enhancement of campus grounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Previous experience in groundskeeping or landscape maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery and landscape-related equipment safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of horticulture practices, including turf management, pest control, and irrigation systems.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain necessary certifications for pesticide application and equipment operation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Turf Management/Horticulture or minimum 5 years experience in irrigation field.
