Part-time Adjunct Faculty are needed to provide instruction for Single Step’s career training programs. Single Step is part of the Center for Alternative and Supported Education (CASE). CASE is Maryland’s most extensive college-based resource for customized, student-centered, quality instruction in academic prep, life skills and workforce readiness, serving adults with learning differences, developmental disabilities, and cognitive challenges. CASE is part of the Continuing Education division of CCBC.

Instructors should have experience teaching students with intellectual, developmental, physical, and social challenges. Most classes are weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. Programs include Child Care, Professional Animal Workers, Veterinary Assistant, Office Skills, Warehouse Technician, Retail Sales and Pharmacy Assistant. Trainings are held on campus and off-campus; travel to client agency sites and internship sites may be required.
Responsibilities include: (1) preparing and teaching lessons for students with disabilities functioning at different levels in the classroom; (2) classroom management of student behaviors with the support of a coordinator; (3) completing paperwork- a syllabus for each class, attendance rosters, registration forms, weekly student progress reports, student evaluations, and any other paperwork required by client agencies; and (4) assessing student competencies for completion of training.

Pay rates for non-credit courses in Continuing Education are commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • Two years of academic and/or professional expertise teaching students with intellectual and other disabilities. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field.
  • Two years of experience teaching or training in a special education classroom setting or inclusive environment or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching essential job skills (soft skills).
  • Computer Proficiency to include Microsoft software and applications as well as experience integrating technology into curriculum.
  • Ability to work a flexible part-time schedule that may include occasional evening and weekend assignments.
  • Experience working or teaching in one or more of the following fields 
    1. Child Care – Maryland 90-hour certification; Infant and Toddler Care
    2. Professional Animal Workers – basic animal care, diet, and skills needed to work in a kennel, animal daycare or animal hospital; 
    3. Office Skills – Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), working with office technology including copiers, phones, and customer service skills.
    4. Warehouse Technician – reading and math skills needed to do inventory in a warehouse setting, using inventory technology, and forklift operation and certification.

Class Specific Essential Duties

  • Ability to work a flexible part-time schedule.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or related field.
  • Experience teaching essential job skills (soft skills).
  • Computer Proficiency to include Microsoft and Google Office software and applications as well as experience integrating technology into curriculum.
  • Experience working or teaching in one or more of the following fields: 
    1. Child Care – Maryland 90-hour certification; Infant and Toddler Care.
    2. Professional Animal Workers – basic animal care, diet, and skills needed to work in a kennel, animal daycare or animal hospital.
    3. Veterinary Assistant – more advanced animal care, animal biology and disease, practical skills.
    4. Office Skills – Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Google Office Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides), working with office technology including copiers, phones, and customer service skills.
    5. Warehouse Technician – reading and math skills needed to do inventory in a warehouse setting, using inventory technology, OSHA standards and compliance, and forklift operation and certification.
    6. Retail Sales – customer interactions, planograms, maintaining inventories, cash register skills.
    7. Pharmacy Technician – math for healthcare workers, customer interactions, insurance claim processing, maintaining inventories, and filling prescriptions.
