Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance Specialist

Job Description

Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Vehicle Maintenace 50%

  • Performs schedule maintenance on a fleet of CSM vehicles.
  • Keeps equipment available for use by inspecting and testing vehicles and completing preventive maintenance such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, fluid adjustments, and tire rotations.
  • Maintains vehicle functional condition by listening to operator complaints and conducting inspections.
  • Repair mechanical end electrical system malfunctions and replaces parts and components.
  • Verifies vehicle serviceability by conducting test drives, adjusting controls, and updating systems.
  • Performs schedule maintenance on gas and diesel engines to include snow equipment, golf carts, medium size construction equipment, etc.
  • Performs schedule maintenance and diagnostics and repairs to CSM electric vehicles.
  • Controls the scheduling and maintenance for a fleet of automotive vehicles ranging from passenger car, work trucks, vans, buses, medium size construction equipment etc.
  • Responsible for the organization and cleanliness of the vehicle maintenance shop.

Machinery Operation /General Equipment Maintenance 25%
  • Performs repairs to facilities miscellaneous related equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs to all tri-county emergency backup generators. 
  • Performs welding and manufacturing as needed to support CSM projects or repairs. 
  • Manufactures hydraulic lines, repair hydraulic cylinders for various CSM equipment.
  • Overseas and maintains all life safety equipment throughout the vehicle maintenance shop. 
  • Operates tractors, lifts, and other equipment to assist maintenance teams.
  • Performs snow removal and repairs to any snow equipment during snowstorms and other severe weather.

Administrative Functions 25%
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties, such as recording, updating, and maintaining maintenance logs.
  • Submits and receives work orders to perform maintenance and repairs on CSM vehicles and equipment or other duties as assigned.
  • Complies the state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Administers vehicle maintenance department budget with respect to supplies, materials, and contracted services by assigning funds to appropriate accounts.   Allocates departmental budgets to assure sufficient resources for vehicle maintenance operations.  Develops scopes of work for contracted services, monitors contractor performance, and processes payment documentation.
  • Provides guidance and assists procurement on tags and titling, registrations, emissions, and other MVA related services for CSM fleet assigned to facilities department.
  • Maintains inventory control of vehicle maintenance supplies.
  • Assists other departments and skill trades as required to ensure continuance of overall facilities operations.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications. 

Minimum Education and Training

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of Six (6) years working in an automotive technical position.
  • Computer skills including experience with work order systems.
  • Microsoft Office Suite skills: Outlook, Excel and Word. 

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

  • The ability to read and understand technical shop manuals.
  • The ability to understand electrical systems and the ability to diagnose electrical components.
  • Welding skills.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license and maintain insurability under the college vehicle liability insurance plan.
  • Ability to safely work off ladders and platforms.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments.
