SUMMARY
Provide staff support of the Manager for the investigation, documentation and resolution of quality issues and initiatives. Support auditing of processes and products. Evaluate subcontractor's quality systems.
Reports directly to the Manager, Quality Assurance Department. Position requires the incumbent to be resourceful, assertive, self-reliant and consistent, in dealing with internal and external customers on a wide range of issues. Considerable latitude in scheduling own activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
The Quality Assurance Engineer shall be the departmental principal point of contact for matters related to the company's quality-related processes. This function shall include:
- Oversee the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Plan, conduct, and support the internal quality program to ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and company policies
- Investigate quality issues to identify root causes, develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and monitor their effectiveness
- Lead, participate and support continuous improvement projects to enhance product quality, optimize processes, and drive efficiency across operations.
- Conduct supplier quality audits to evaluate and ensure compliance with company standards.
- Assisting with subcontractor evaluations.
- Analyzing processes as necessary and recommending improvements as appropriate for out of control process conditions, sporadic defects and non-conforming products.
- Maintaining an understanding of contractual quality requirements.
- Providing input, as appropriate, to business and production plans.
- Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. Engineering degree or equivalent, plus minimum five (5) years experience in the field.
- Ability to understand ship specifications, drawings, MIL-STD, CFRs, ABS Rules, etc.
- Self-motivated and proactive in identifying and resolving problems.
- Strong understanding of Quality Management Systems (QMS), and ISO 9001 standard.
- Familiarity with root cause analysis and problem solving techniques and tools.
- Previous experience managing CAPA processes and auditing.
- Strong analytical skills, reporting, and data analysis.
- Quality Auditor certification preferred.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus and distinguish color. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing.Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching.Position requires employees to carry, raise, lower, push or pull objects up to 25lbs.Position requires the ability to walk on scaffolding and work at heights aboard vessels under construction or repair.Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements.While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 10% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments. The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Responsible for assistance to production and staff functions in the resolution of process issues affecting internal and external customers. Continuously review existing processes for potential improvements.
PAY SCALE
$81,700 - $112,500
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
