About the Department

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) is among the largest and most prominent in the nation. The department offers Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in both Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Aerospace Engineering (AE). The department also offers accelerated BS/MS degrees in both programs. Current research specialization in MAE includes dynamic systems and controls, vibrations, biomechanics, design optimization, smart materials and structures, precision engineering, MEMS and NEMS, advanced manufacturing, aerodynamics, UAV flight research, materials, renewable energy, combustion, hypersonics, propulsion, space exploration systems, and computational fluid dynamics.

The MAE department currently boasts 49 tenure-track faculty, 7 non-tenure track faculty, and 15 staff. The faculty is highly recognized with seven National Science Foundation CAREER Award recipients, four NSF RIA recipients, one NASA Early Career Faculty Award recipient, four ASME Fellows, seven AIAA Fellows, 20 members in the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers, and five named professors. The MAE Department has an enrollment of over 1,100 undergraduates and 400 graduate students and has conferred over 4,000 degrees since 2000. The department is housed in Engineering Building III, a four-story, 250,000-square foot facility built in 2010. An annex houses wind tunnels, an anechoic chamber, internal combustion engine dynamometers, and additional research labs. NC State’s location on Centennial Campus, combined with its proximity to the Research Triangle Park and neighboring universities, provides extensive opportunities for academic and industrial interaction and collaboration.

Essential Job Duties

This part-time (20 hours per week) Accounting Technician position provides fiscal and procurement support for the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE). You will serve as a part of a two person team that focuses on day-to-day financial and procurement operations, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and University guidelines.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage financial and procurement transactions, including vouchers, journals, P-card transactions, purchase orders, requisitions, travel, and reimbursements, with a primary focus on P-card and travel processing.
  • Process invoices, reimbursements, and purchase orders exceeding $5,000, ensuring compliance with policies, securing quotes, and maintaining accurate records for reconciliation.
  • Administer REU (Research for Undergraduate Experience) student payments and provide guidance on spending and travel policies to ensure compliance.
  • Analyze financial data for accuracy, resolve issues, and correct or reverse entries as needed.
  • Attend departmental and university meetings to stay updated on financial policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance, internal controls, proper documentation, and manage check pick-up and deposit processes.

Minimum Experience/Education

High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Proven attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work accurately and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, methods, and procedures, with the ability to research and resolve discrepancies in transactions.
  • General understanding of technology and financial management systems.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply laws and regulations related to financial records.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present financial information clearly.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, meet strict deadlines, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment while exercising independent judgment and discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial systems such as PeopleSoft or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with additional data analysis tools and software packages for creating and maintaining data.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a client-oriented and solution-focused approach.
  • Experience promoting effective working relationships across diverse groups.
