Summary of Position
The University of New Hampshire’s Earth Systems Research Center seeks applications for a Research Faculty position at the Assistant Research Professor level, working at the intersection of macroscale hydrology, water quality, and biogeochemistry.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Design and execute policy-relevant research projects related to water resources, groundwater modeling, the water-food-energy system, water quality, and water governance in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
- Implement field and modeling studies, data collection, statistical analysis, and model calibration and validation in these areas.
- Effectively communicate research outcomes through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences and other scientific forums.
- Engage K-12 students and teachers in community-based water quality monitoring.
- Secure external funds by serving as principal investigator or co-investigator on proposals to federal or non-governmental funding agencies.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, or a closely related field, plus 8 or more years integrating field sampling and modeling to advance understanding of how hydrology and biogeochemistry interact to sustain or degrade critical ecosystem services that support society. The required background includes the ability to both work in interdisciplinary teams to carry out policy-relevant research related to water governance as well as discipline-specific abilities to develop and apply macroscale hydrologic models (e.g., the Water Balance Model) and groundwater models, utilize open-source languages and tools (e.g., Python and jupyter notebooks), and quantitatively sample watersheds for water quality indicators such as nitrogen, conductivity, and plastics. Applicants must also have a proven track record of publishing in reputable scientific journals and attracting external sources of funding to support their research. While teaching is not required, experience delivering courses in Groundwater Hydrology and Environmental Fate and Transport will be reviewed favorably. In addition, the candidate will be expected to chair and serve on graduate thesis committees. Competitive candidates will also have experience in outreach to and engagement with K-12 audiences and will be committed to advancing justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in science.
